Accton Launches Ultra High-End Server Switch for Data Center and Telco Markets

The CSP-9250 brings a fast and economical server-switch solution for 10GbE/25GbE and 40GbE/100GbE traffic handling using the latest Intel® Skylake family processers and switch fabric

Hsinchu, Taiwan, July 13, 2017 – Accton (TWSE: 2345.TW) today announces the CSP-9250, a new member of its growing family of next-generation network appliances. The CSP-9250 targets data center and network service providers that are challenged to keep up with bandwidth demands whilst maintaining network visibility and software defined WANs. The move to a more open systems approach using the latest Intel® Skylake server processors and Tomahawk switch fabric, reduces the cost overhead of proprietary designs and helps streamline overall software development efforts. The CSP-9250 uses the Tomahawk switch fabric to add an extra layer of intelligence in front of two Intel Skylake server processors in order to optimize packet delivery from the high-speed 10/25/40/100 GbE ports.

Based on the latest Intel® Xeon® processor platform, the CSP-9250 system is an innovative upgrade from Accton’s leading switch platforms with Intel CPUs. The CSP-9250 has been designed for maximum performance, scalability, and functionality in a 1U rack-mount footprint. Two Intel® Xeon® Skylake processors (Socket P) provide the latest architectural enhancements, larger on-chip cache memories, as well as two Intel® UltraPath Interconnects running at up to 10.4GT/s for reduced cross-socket memory I/O latencies and increased throughput. Each socket supports six DDR4 channels with speeds up to 2666 MHz for up to 768GB of ECC memory when using the latest RDIMM technology. Advanced thermal system design enables support for processors with 85W TDP on standard SKUs and up to 165W on special SKUs available via customized COTS framework. This allows the appliance to scale from mainstream 8- and 12-core CPUs to the highest performance 28-core processors available today.

The innovative architecture of the CSP-9250 is next-generation, high-end network appliance tailored for network and security platform manufacturers looking to scale application throughput to hundreds of terabits per second. The CSP-9250 optimizes packet delivery from high-speed network interfaces into CPU sockets and into the virtual machines by adding an extra layer of intelligence in front of the Intel® Xeon® processors. Demanding packet processing applications, such as network/cybersecurity and network analytics, can easily offload compute intensive functions like packet classification, load balancing, flow state tracking, and virtual switching to cost-effectively meet high-speed networking needs.

The Tomahawk offers increased bandwidth capacity, scalability, and cost efficiency for mega data centers and high-performance computing environments. Tomahawk integrates 128 serdes running at over 25 Gbps, with large on-chip forwarding tables and packet-buffer memory. With next-generation software control capabilities, the Tomahawk provides enhanced traffic load balancing, network visibility, and control of traffic provisioning. Tomahawk’s proven architecture and comprehensive feature-set will enable partners to develop and deploy solutions more quickly, accelerating the transition to high-density 100GE interconnects.

The Tomahawk switches traffic from the high-speed network ports over PCIe network interfaces, providing up to 140Gbps of data bandwidth to the Xeon processors. This enables the offload of compute-intensive workloads required by network functions, such as intrusion detection systems, firewalls, or virtual switching, and accelerates overall packet delivery. The CSP-9250 makes use of its Ethernet switching capability, frame processing pipelines and ACLs are supported to provide advanced features for network appliance and NFV applications. The Ethernet switching provides high-bandwidth, low-latency connectivity between the CPUs and the network, and offloads Open vSwitch functions into hardware, helping improve system performance and reducing system cost by freeing up CPU cores.
